Helmrich’s Seafood has deep roots in Williamsport, with a story that stretches back well over a century. In the early 1990s, stories of the “good ol’ days in Williamsport” often centered around the Helmrich name. Charlie Helmrich was well known in the community, forming lifelong friendships and even traveling to Florida for deep sea fishing trips with friends and family.
Charlie and his brothers, Oliver and William, founded Helmrich Bro’s, which would later become Helmrich’s Seafood. For a time in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the business was also known as Helmrich’s Fruit Car-Market. What began as a produce and seafood operation steadily grew into a trusted local institution.
The earliest records of the family business at its current location—131–139 5th Street—date back to 1924. Their father, William F. Helmrich (1877–1942), operated a wholesale and retail fruit, produce, and seafood business there. However, the family’s entrepreneurial spirit began even earlier.
William’s father, August Helmrich (1839/40–1912), immigrated to the United States on August 19, 1863 aboard the Neptune. A skilled wagon maker who later became a produce “trucker,” August played a pivotal role in launching the family business. In 1895, when William was just 18 years old, August built him a wagon used to transport produce and seafood from railcars directly to customers. That venture became known as “William F. Helmrich’s Seafood.”
Early directory records list William’s occupation as a produce “trucker” through 1908. By 1909, he was operating from 158–160 E. Willow Street while residing at 412 Academy Street. The business remained on E. Willow Street until at least 1921, moved briefly to 427 Market Street in 1922–1923, and finally established itself at the current 5th Street location in 1924.
For nearly 100 years, Helmrich’s Seafood has proudly remained at that same location, continuing its tradition of providing the highest quality seafood to the Williamsport community. What began with a hand-built wagon and a commitment to hard work has grown into a legacy of freshness, reliability, and family dedication that spans generations.
